“Few beefs” 2009-10-27
By DVDRYET (Mtn. Vw, CA)
This is a pretty good system for the price. My only beefs are:

1. Alarm is not loud enough. Perhaps ok for an apartment or if you live on a quiet street. I live on a busy street so I had to buy another one for each side of the house.

2. The dialer is probably useless since the phone lines can be cut. I would get the simpler system and get the 2nd alarm.

3. Change the zoning for the sensors right away so there is no delay. Think about it; during the delay the robbers can just locate the alarm and smash it before it goes off.

“Excited & Disappointed” 2009-10-06
By Tashina M. Fay
I was so excited to get this alarm system. We got it out & I realized that it is made out of poor quality. I’ve kept it because I felt I had no other option. FYI The alarm system is so loud wear earplugs to set it up.

“Good intruder protection” 2009-10-03
By rblaw (Ann Arbor, MI USA)
This security system consists of two separate devices with two different setup manuals. There is an alarm control panel with sensors and a manual. The other device is an emergency dialer with its manual. When selling the systems as a package, it would make so much sense to put the instructions in a single manual. Between the two, there are instructions that are just wrong. Installation would have been a hassle if I hadn’t first read the Amazon reviews.

The dialer manual tells you to program the individual sensors to the dialer. The only makes sense if you bought the sensors without an alarm control panel. But I would have tried to program the individual sensors had not other reviewers pointed out the error.

I finished the setup of the alarm control panel and then set it aside for wall mounting the next day. But before I mounted it on the wall, it began beeping and flashing the low battery light. Sure enough the 9 volt battery was down to 8 volts after 24 hours. I should have left the device plugged in, but now I know how long it operates on a the backup battery.

There are instructions on how to replace the PIN which has the default of 000. It makes no sense to leave a default PIN which an intruder could use to turn off the alarm. After you set the new pin, the dialer instructions tells you to program the new PIN to the dialer with a sequence that includes inserting the PIN in the alarm control panel and pressing B twice. What it neglects to mention is that the sequence is the same as the emergency silent alarm procedure. I learned that when the dialer promptly called my cell phone.

My package included an instruction addendum that said I should make the telephone line connection at a point in the telephone line route before any other line connections. That was not realistically feasible for my setup, but I don’t know how important that is.

I bought the package for security at my vacation residence. At my principal residence, I have the ADT service. I have paid $300 in false alarm charges because PIN entry problems by workers, cat sitters and friends. The one time there was a real intruder, the deafening internal alarm quickly scared him off. That deafening internal alarm may be all that is needed with the Skylink system. (My ears rang for an hour after I accidentally activated the alarm.)

The “complete wireless system” is only designed for intruder protection. I thought it might also send me a message if the power was turned off or the backup battery became low. Not so. There are additional components that can be purchased for alerting you to temperature problems, smoke, flooding, noise and vibration. None for a power outage. But I have a separate Ace Hardware device that will call me if there are temperature, power or battery backup problems. I can also call the device to check temperature and power. There doesn’t seem to be any way to contact the Skylink devices by telephone. Apparently that deafening alarm will keep blasting until someone can get to the control panel.

The package does what it is advertised to do and fits my needs when combined with my other monitor and my Panasonic network camera. I would give it a four star rating if the documentation were better.

“Simple DIY System That Works” 2009-10-01
By Hung Lin Hsu
I used to be with ADT and paid a monthly fee. After moving to a smaller home, I decided to just set up the alarm system by myself. After surveying several systems, I found the Skylink SC-1000 to be the simplest yet cheapest that fit my needs.

First it’s quite easy to set up. The tech support rep also helped a lot but then my questions were just because of my misunderstanding of the manual. I set up the whole thing over a weekend and tested it several times. It worked well. I even bought another system for my uncle.

Just a little tip here. Get a remote keypad so that you can hide both the auto dialer and the central control panel in your closet. And be sure to program both the keypad password and the central control panel password (they can be programmed to be different.)

I only hope they come out with a GSM module. And also, the door sensor has a wire coming out of the transmitter to the magnet. This is the only thing I don’t like about the system.

“Really Excellent DIY Home Security” 2009-09-18
By Jimmy B
This kit has really given me peace of mind about our home security and done so at a very reasonable price. We just bought a new single family home and, after changing out the locks and installing deadbolts, wanted added protection for us and our new baby. I also wanted a system with “chimes” to warn us if our daughter opens a door (when she gets old enough, that is).

Our installation: I purchased two extra door/window sensors and installed these on all doors leading outside and a sliding glass door (used screws on all but the sliding glass door, where I had to use the double-sided tape). I installed the motion detector in our living room where all the electronics are. Since we have cats, this is the only place a sensor would work because it can be sealed off. Installed the keypad near the door leading to the garage (and wired it into the wall, for a professional look). The dialer is only programmed to call me, for now, until I am sure everything works over time.

So far, we’ve had no false alarms and the sensors have worked flawlessly. A few things I learned:

–When syncing the dialer, either get someone’s help or be close to the main keypad since you only have a few seconds to type in the code. Also, be sure the motion detector is not turned on or close by when syncing (otherwise the dialer will sync to that individual device (if tripped) and not the main alarm system).

–Be sure to customize the settings with the extra zones so only the main entry/exit doors have the delays. A thief could do a lot of damage in 30 seconds before the alarm is triggered.

–Buy extra security stickers for doors and windows for your system to ward off intruders. For instance, SECURITY SYSTEM SIGNS ~1 Sign & 3 Free Decals~ alarm. A yard sign would help too. I’m guessing this will take care of 98% of thieves looking for an opportunity.

In the future, I’m planning on buying another siren to install upstairs, both for security and to better hear the chime if a door is opened. I also may buy the device that turns on a blinking light, just for added deterence and to signal neighbors that the alarm is triggered.

Overall, I would say this is an excellent alternative to paying someone to install and monitor your house. A great value that gives you confidence your home is secure.
